Our new online guide helps neighbors plan a walk or bike ride to identify needed improvements and make the case for change
A walk or bike audit is one of the most effective tools a neighborhood group can use to identify safety problems, brainstorm possible solutions on the ground, gather data, and build a compelling case for change. During an audit, you go to a specific block, intersection, or a stretch of street to observe and document conditions, collect stories from neighbors who use that space every day, and bring those findings to the people who can fund, design, and build the needed improvements.
Although these audits are simple events, doing them well requires intentional planning and follow-up. There’s actually a lot to think about!
- Where to go and how long should the walking or biking route be?
- Who to invite? And how to get people to show up?
- What issues to look out for?
- What solutions to propose?
- How to collect useful data?
- What to do with that data after the event?
- What supplies are needed to make it go smoothly?
There are some great resources that help answer these questions, such as AARP’s Walk and Bike Audit Toolkits. But we wanted a guide that distills the “need to know” information for biking and walking advocates in Pittsburgh’s unique neighborhoods, so we made one!
Take a look, use it to plan a walk or bike audit in your neighborhood, and let us know how we can help.
Want to try it out in person? Attend our next Advocacy Network Gathering!
BikePGH’s Summer Advocacy Network Gathering will feature a practical workshop to teach you how to organize an effective walk/bike audit in your neighborhood that can help you identify issues, generate ideas for solutions, engage new people, and guide your advocacy strategy.
This is for anyone interested in bike & pedestrian advocacy, even if you don’t have a campaign or you’re not (yet) part of a bike/ped advocacy group!
We’ll also share updates on advocacy opportunities and infrastructure projects happening across the city.
