MoveForwardPGH Campaign, 2020-2022
A two-year collaboration between the City, BikePGH and POGOH with support from People for Bikes
MoveForwardPGH was a two-year initiative of the City of Pittsburgh’s Department of Mobility and Infrastructure (DOMI) to rapidly implement their new 2020 Bike(+) Plan, which calls for 120 miles of new or enhanced bicycle connections. This was the City’s first bicycle master plan since 1999, and is focused on increasing network connections for those on bikes and other low-speed devices.
With support from People for Bikes and local nonprofit partners, BikePGH and POGOH (formerly Healthy Ride), the City engaged the community throughout the process of installing new bike-friendly connections throughout Pittsburgh.
The MoveForward team was on hand to support the community engagement efforts and raise awareness of the benefits, for everyone, of streets built to be safe and accessible for all modes of transportation. Through direct mail, yard signs, in-person and online engagement, the team helped explain how all users of the road will benefit from the improvements, whether driving, walking, scooting, cycling, or rolling.
In addition to direct community outreach, the MoveForwardPGH team managed a robust communications campaign that included billboards, bus wraps, video, radio and TV spots. This campaign helped DOMI build the necessary support to rapidly build out parts of the bike network.
What did MoveForwardPGH Accomplish?
The MoveForwardPGH program helped the City’s DOMI organize the processes, tools, and designs to rapidly implement street improvements to expand the bike network, identified in the Bike(+) Plan. Mostly, this included new and improved bike lanes, but it also encouraged DOMI to be creative in making network connections in places that they could not install separated bike lanes.
One newer tool, included the installation of traffic calming, resulting in a new street type called the Neighborway. A Neigbhorway is essentially traffic calming located on the identified bike network to help create lower stress streets, usually in a residential area, to help bicyclists feel more comfortable riding and drivers to understand that they are on a street where they need to drive slow and careful.
These process and tools will help DOMI more effectively improve the bike network for years to come.
