COMMUNITY IS EVERYTHING TO US!

You can help support a vibrant, well-connected community

Picture it: You’re a part of a biking community with ample connections to fun events, group rides, and programs. You’re experiencing the joy of cycling and walking safely within your community. You’re getting a first-hand look at how BikePGH events bring people together to enjoy safer streets and more sustainable transportation. Well, this community exists and you can join us! Just come to an event or sign up for a program and you can experience it for yourself.

Another important part of this work is that we make it a priority to ensure our events and programs are free or low cost and accessible with a low barrier to entry. Every contribution enables us to continue offering this in 2023, because BikePGH works to ensure that no one is turned away from our fundraisers due to inability to pay. Keep reading to learn how our programs and events help to foster a Pittsburgh that is safe, accessible, fun, connected, and thriving– and how YOU can help support it all!

Here are some 2022 community highlights:

  • OpenStreetsPGH is our big, free community event series. In 2022, we hosted THREE OpenStreets events, with one in Downtown/Lawrenceville, one in the East End, and one in Downtown/South Side. In total 50,000+ people came out to safely enjoy city streets via people-powered mobility such as walking, cycling, scootering, and rolling. OpenStreetsPGH helps people experience people-first streets and inspires advocacy.
  • Bike Anywhere Week: This week-long celebration of biking included a WMNBikePGH group ride, an Operation Illumination, an Advocacy bike ride through the Strip District, a business member happy hour, and Commuter Cafes in Schenley Park, Market Square, SouthSide Works.
  • Bike to Campus Week: This week of events at Pitt and CMU showcased bike-focused offerings to students and faculty. BikePGH supported each campus’s events by attending mobility fairs, hosting two simultaneous Operation Illuminations, hosting a free Confident City Cycling Class, and supporting another class.

Your contribution helps us break down barriers in the community

We work to create welcoming spaces for all, including the many cyclists who do not fit the cycling world’s gender and body-type stereotypes.

  • WMNBikePGH: Our year-round programming for women and non-binary, transgender, and genderqueer folks includes an eight week cyclist-oriented Winter Yoga Series in partnership with Open Up Pittsburgh, eight rides and workshops to build community and help to break down gendered barriers in the cycling world.
  • WMNBikePGH Camping Trip: Twenty participants started at Golden Triangle Bicycle, biked 52 miles roundtrip on the GAP trail and camped out overnight at Dravo’s Landing. Many joined us for their first bike camping experience ever – but certainly not their last!
  • Women and Non-Binary Bike Summit: The Women & Non-Binary Summit is a “pay-what-you-wish” event full of workshops and fun that WMNBikePGH hosts every year in October. Our ninth annual Summit brought together nearly 75 attendees to break barriers and empower each other in their cycling journeys.
Morgan found a community in our WMNBikePGH program. A Northside resident, Morgan uses the Allegheny Commons bike lanes to get to area businesses and cultural attractions. Our WMNBikePGH camping trip helped Morgan improve her cycling skills and explore her love of the great outdoors.

BikePGH needs to raise $50,000 by December 31, 2022! Please help us continue to do this important work in 2023.

Our fundraisers prioritize community participation and no one is turned away

  • PedalPGH: In 2022, our annual fundraiser ride returned as a fully in-person event with four routes of 10 – 62 miles. Over 2800 riders raised more than $240,000 to make Pittsburgh streets safer for all. All are invited to participate in Pittsburgh’s favorite bike event regardless of ability to pay.
  • 20th Anniversary Party: This special event celebrated 20 years of our bike and pedestrian advocacy and was attended by over 100 including elected officials Deb Gross and Sara Innamorato. Guests enjoyed a special 20th Anniversary Ale created in our honor by East End, Trace Brewing, Allegheny City Brewing, and Two Frays Brewery.

We stay engaged with our community’s work, too

  • In 2022, we attended 23 community events in 11 neighborhoods throughout Pittsburgh, distributing hundreds of copies of our official Pittsburgh Bike Map, and engaging many more people in the fight for safer streets.
  • Our event racks provided free bike parking to 11 community events, including iconic summer music festivals such as Pittonkatonk and the Millvale Music Festival.
  • We provided a bike valet for the Three Rivers Arts Festival and the WYEP Summer Music Festival.
  • We donated BikePGH merchandise to 7 local nonprofits in support of their fundraising efforts.
  • Our Business Program also engages workplaces and organizations across the region. BikePGH continues to build a network of individuals, local businesses, nonprofit organizations committed to making Pittsburgh a better place to live. In 2022, our Business Program has grown to include over 60 businesses!

Our members are a core community of advocates

  • In 2022, over 450 people became members of BikePGH for a total of over 2200 active members. We look to our members and their communities to help set our advocacy work priorities. By raising their voices collectively, our members are instrumental in getting the work done.
  • We support bike/ped committees through our advocacy work and help amplify neighborhood voices. Anyone can get involved in improving their neighborhood through neighborhood bicycle/pedestrian committees throughout Pittsburgh.
