Community members let us know what they needed from BikePGH

We asked your opinion and you gave it. THANK YOU.

Every other year, Bike Pittsburgh produces a survey to collect feedback from the community. Distributed via email and social media, this is an opportunity for BikePGH members and non-members to candidly and anonymously tell us their opinions of our work and their relationship with active transportation in Pittsburgh.

This information helps BikePGH adapt its work so it can most effectively address the issues that are important to the people that use our city streets!

Now, we’re sharing the findings from that survey so that you know we are taking your input seriously, so that you can see the feedback from your neighbors, and to share a snapshot about the state of biking and walking in Pittsburgh.

Here’s what you said

Among BikePGH members and non-members alike, our community is multi-modal!

81% own bikes, 80% own cars, 52% have transit access. Of those that own a bike, over half commute by bike for work, errands, or other tasks. More than 80% of survey respondents walk as a mode of transportation.

Across members and non-members alike, one message rose above all others: folks want safer places to bike and walk. So many people are using multiple modes of transportation in their daily life and many of them yearn for more connected and protected bike infrastructure. Over 60% of our respondents name this as their highest priority. Secondary priorities are walking infrastructure like painted crosswalks, bump outs, improved sidewalks, as well as additional efforts to influence the behavior of car drivers on our streets.

This aligns directly with our work in advocacy, from pushing for protected bike lanes to advancing neighborhood traffic calming and safer street design.

Beyond infrastructure, folks highlighted the importance of education. Programs like Learn 2 Ride were specifically called out as valuable and worth expanding. Education is seen as a piece of the puzzle – not just for cyclists, but for building a culture of safety and shared understanding among all road users.

There is also a clear desire to make biking and walking more inclusive and accessible, where folks of all ages, incomes, and backgrounds feel welcomed and supported. This is why we put so much effort into our community outreach, Neighborhood Walks, and WMNBikePGH programming – because everyone deserves the opportunity to have mobility options and access to active transportation.

We’ve also heard that people in our community care about active transportation because of its connection with climate change and affordability. We already know that investments in biking and walking improve people’s economic mobility and reduce the climate impact of moving around our city.

We also asked current donors and non-donors alike, what would compel you to invest more funds in the BikePGH’s mission? Turns out, the answer is more specific information about how we’d use and direct your charitable gifts. We hear you loud and clear. Please keep a look out for the emails we send for our May Membership Campaign – we will make sure you know what your generosity makes possible.

In the meantime, consider riding with us for the Spring Bike Picnic in order to see bike infrastructure made possible by BikePGH’s advocacy work, and read this blog about the policies we’re hoping to see from our new Mayor in 2026.

Our annual Year-in-Review is also a great summary of our efforts and the impact of your giving. Everything on this list is made possible by the donors, members, advocates, volunteers, and neighbors that make up our community.

Want to give us more feedback? Email us at info@bikepgh.org or submit your anonymous feedback anytime through this form.

Your feedback so far has been clear – you want a city where:

  • You can bike comfortably, even if you are not an experienced rider
  • Kids and families can safely walk and roll through their neighborhoods
  • Street design is for people, not just cars.

Let’s keep celebrating these wins for safer streets! Every donation to BikePGH helps keep the momentum going for this important movement
